How often should you write a blog post is a question that I get asked so often it’s not funny!
I would say it is in the top 5 questions.
But why do people get so hung up on this question?
Why are there so many articles and surveys about blog posting frequency?
It’s obviously about wanting to get more internet traffic to make more sales with the biggest bang for your buck.
I’ve thought about this question and researched it a lot myself.
Ultimately, I’ve found that there is no hard and fast rule, but there are plenty of opinions and other factors that come into play, which is what I want to discuss in this article to give you a road map.
Neil Patel has a detailed blog post to determine how often you need to blog, that covers every type of blog you will find on the internet.
Brian Dean has obtained massive success with his blog backlinko.com by only publishing once a month (if that). What he does is write a massively detailed post, 4000 words plus, and spends the rest of the month promoting it.
But I’m now going to safely assume you are not running TechCrunch, or The Huffington Post, and you don’t have a publishing team.
What you are is a one man / woman operation who wants to build a successful blog that generates sales with affiliate / network marketing by ranking in the search engines….
If so, this blog post is for you 🙂
What do I do?
For me, I try and post 5 days a week because there is evidence to suggest that Google has a “preference”for fresh long form content.
Also for my blog, I have definitely seen an increase in traffic since moving from once a week or twice a week to 5 times a week.
So let’s look at the pros and cons of positing 5 times a week.
• More traffic.
• Your blog writing improves.
• You learn to blog smarter and quicker as it becomes a habit.
• I personally enjoy blogging now.
• You are helping your audience more by providing more content.
• It’s a shorter patch to achieve your goals.
• More likely to have an engaged audience than if you were posting once a week.
• More blogging means more work.
• Less time with our families and friends and the television!
• Reader burn out. Your audience may not want to hear from you 5 times per week.
What is the best time to blog?
You have to remember that your blog is not the only one your audience is going to see, so it makes sense to try and be the first – especially if you want people to share it on social media and comment – who doesn’t.
Ramsay from blogtyrant.com has researched the best time to blog in detail and found the answer to be between 9:30 and 11:00 am USA East Coast Time. The best days being Tuesdays and Thursdays.
What’s my recommendation? How long should you blog for seo?
I think the main factor you have to consider is your lifestyle and your desired outcome. If you want to build a 6 figure blog post, then you are going to have to find a way to fit the work in that suits your circumstances.
This is particularly difficult if your nearest and dearest thinks you are wasting your time with your efforts – been there got the t-shirt!
If your blog is new, you need to say to the search engines “Hi I’m here, you can trust me” – So you need to pump out the content and gain trust.
You can take your foot off the gas later.
2 Step process to answer how often should you write a blog post
1. You need to make blogging a habit. Jerry Seinfeld, when he first started out and wanted to write a new joke every day, used to cross out each day on a calendar to make sure he never broke the chain of creating daily jokes.
When you make something a habit then it becomes part of your day. Now when I start a new day, I think about what I’m going to blog about for the day. As part of my daily routine.
If life gets in the way that day, and I can’t post a new blog, or if I’m on vacation, I don’t beat myself up about it, I just carry on where I can.
2. Join a gym or take up another form of an exercise.
I find that having another goal – for me, to lose weight and get fitter, helps enormously with my blogging goals.
I now wear a Fitbit which tells me my exercise goal for the day, which I associate with my blogging goal for the day. They seem to work hand in hand.
In fact, building an online business is very similar to getting fitter or body building. It takes regular, consistent effort to see results in both. Nothing happens overnight…
What the ideal blog post frequency?
Based on my research and my own experience I would recommend the following.
If you’re starting from scratch, then blog Monday to Friday with at least 1000+ words, so it becomes a habit.
If you can’t do that, then Monday, Wednesday and Friday with 1000+ words. But you may find it takes longer to become a habit.
If you can’t manage that then once a week. It’s better to blog once a week than not at all. And there’s a good chance you’ll be able to blog more in the future.
And remember, make sure you are always helping your customer. Your blog should always be about them, not you.
You can follow this Invest, Learn Teach methodology if you’re not sure what to write about.
How long should my blog posts be?
Another question that is asked a lot.
If you write 1000+ words, there is a lot of evidence to show you have a better chance of being ranked higher in the search engines. If you can manage more without compromising on quality, then go for it 😉
I hope this article on how often should you write a blog post has helped you with your blogging efforts.
