Hashtags have now become so entrenched in our popular culture that we all know what they are even if we don’t use them or know how to use them.
They are everywhere, as you can see from the picture.
What are hashtags?
If you’re from the US, then they are what you know as the pound sign. If you’re a musician you would know it as the sharp sign!
Hashtags are a means to categorize a social media message by its content. If a lot of people are using the same hashtag, then it will trend.
For example in February #AcademyAwards is a trending hashtag because this is the time of year the Oscars take place.
Examples of #hashtags in sentences

#RebelsRecon goes behind the scenes of Rebel Resolve & gives you a peek at the #StarWarsRebels season finale!
A hashtag serves one of two purposes
1. If you are writing the piece of content, for example a tweet, by including a hashtag it enables someone out of your network to find it.
2. If you are reading some content that includes a hashtag, then by clicking on it, you are instantly presented with the latest tweets that include that hashtag.
Hashtags feature on main blogging platforms including Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Google +. On each of these the role they play is different.
How to use hashtags on twitter
Twitter is where hashtags first appeared. It is considered best practice to use 1 or 2 hashtags in a tweet, but never more than 3. If you’re writing a tweet that doesn’t warrant a hashtag then don’t use one.
This guide will help you decide how you should be using hashtags on Twitter.
Hashtags on Instagram
On Instagram things are different. On this platform it’s all about making photos findable. As you can see from the red phone box; this is achieved by stuffing them with relevant and some not so relevant hashtags.
Hashtags on Facebook.
The rules and etiquette are similar to Twitter. In other words, use one two of the most relevant hashtags you can find.
On this platform the hashtags are automatically added for you. You can also add them yourself by using the explore option.
