As you can see from the title, today I’m going to show you how to optimize blog posts for seo.
And this post is going to be a bit of a game because I want you to see how this very post is optimized for seo and how you can learn from it to do the same on your blog.
And we don’t need an expensive keyword generation tools. Just the noodle in our head and the very tool that people use to search with – yes Google. In my opinion, using some 3rd party tool is like asking a French Teacher for Spanish lessons!
Let’s cover a few rules of how to optimize blog posts for seo
Golden Rule 1 Always write about what people are searching for.
Golden Rule 2 Solve problems.
Golden Rule 3 Readers first, search engines second.
Everything you see and read on this post is here for a reason.
Don’t expect anyone to be interested in what you’re doing this weekend…well at least not till you’re a blogging superstar.
Instead, what you must be doing at this stage is just answering the problems of your avatar.
Here’s how to find the best keyword
There’s no definitive formula to kick this process off, you just have to get inside the head of your avatar and search for a problem he or she might have.
From there, find the best keywords for that problem.
So today I was tweaking my blog for SEO purposes and I had the thought of writing an article based around this very subject.
So I just started typing into Google ‘optimize your blog….’
..and straight away I am presented with lots of suggestions as you can see.
Then after hitting search, Google kindly serves up more keyword suggestions at the bottom of the search results as you can see below.
So now Google has presented me with a nice bunch of keywords on a plate. I can now gather up all the appropriate keywords that people are actually typing in (Golden Rule 1)

I have not chosen ‘how to do seo for blogger’ as this refers to Google’s own blogging platform, which is not relevant to my audience.
Insert keywords into the Google Keyword Planner tool
The next step is to put the keywords into the Google Keyword Planner tool to gauge the popularity.
To use this tool you will have to create a Google account.
Ok, so the ones I have underlined stand out nicely for me.
Because people are paying money to bid for this keyword and the competition is medium – low.
But look at the last one…
It’s a question (Golden Rule 2) It’s got low competition, and people are paying a whopping $76.12 per click.
So you might be thinking now, “hey but Jeremy the search volume is low 10-100.”
Don’t worry about this because we are going to suck all the other keywords into the article too. 🙂
And also we have a better chance of ranking for a long tailed keyword like this.
Let’s now confirm the competition is low for our keyword
All you do is put the keyword between double quotes and hit search again.
As you can see just 6,530 which is very low. I would consider anything under 100,000 as low.
Let’s confirm that people are paying for advertising with this keyword
If they are then it confirms the keyword is popular. As you can see above there is a paid ad to www.coursera.org/seo which is good to see.
So we’ve now got our main keyword and we’ve got our secondary keywords.
Now we have to construct a gorgeous article to add to our blog for seo purposes.
But remember, this article is for humans first search engines second. (Golden Rule3)
In this case of this tutorial, you’re looking at it, but here is another example where I chose mlm for introverts as the keyword.
How to write seo friendly blog posts?
Here is a simple framework for your article. And I recommend you write your article with more than 1000 words.
Because the search engines favour longer, detailed articles, and the longer your article is, the more chance you have of dropping in additional keywords you hadn’t previously found.
- List the Major Points
- Captivating Title containing main keyword
- Picture containing the main keyword in the file name and in the alt text of Write Intro
- List Major Points
- Write Conclusion
So as you’re writing your article, keep the list of keywords to the side and weave them in where you can. I recommend you use Microsoft Word to get your article exactly right before adding it to WordPress.
Also while you are writing, try to weave into your article links to your other articles that highlight the points you are making for further reading, and also include one or two links to authoritative websites, to show Google you are spreading the love and not selfishly keeping visitors to yourself.
So now you’ve finished you 1000 word plus article and you’ve sprinkled in lots of other keywords, keeping it natural.
Next. Go and do something else for an hour and come back to check your article for flow, grammar and spelling mistakes.
Time to publish to WordPress
First, make sure you have the Yoast SEO plugin installed.
Next, paste your article into WordPress and format it similar to this article. I like Verdana size 12 font.
Make the title of your blog post and the url to be your main keyword
Your text should be formatted in bite sized chunks. You can forget about what you learned in English about paragraphs. In the online world, attention spans are low, so write. lots of small digestible paragraphs.
When you have installed the Yoast SEO plugin, you will see there is an option to enter your focus keyword. This is your main keyword.
Now you will see the traffic lights showing you how well your SEO is optimized and how you can improve it.
Now you have to go back to your article and massage it till you get the green lights.
Where you start a new header section, select the text, and change it to an h2 tag.
For example, my heading you will see above, Time to publish to WordPress is an h2 tag
Next up is to change the text snippet which people will see in the search engine results. If you don’t do this then the first line of the text will be grabbed from your article. So change this to make your article more enticing. Make sure you include your main keyword, which I’ve highlighted. You will see the green bar when you’ve entered it correctly.
Include some more pictures
First install the wp-smush plugin. This plugin will compress the size of pictures you put into your blog posts. Large picture cause large page load times, which the search engines will penalize you for.
So choose an appropriate picture from pixabay.com and download the medium sized version of it.
When its downloaded, change the name of it to your main keyword.
If you like you can add your own text to the picture.
Then press the add media button and load it into WordPress. When the file is loaded, enter into the alt text section your main keyword.
Next you can add more pictures if you like, and in a similar way, change the file name to a secondary keyword and put it in the alt text of the picture.
Enter your secondary keywords as tags
Finally, in the tag section, enter your seconds keywords as tags
This will improve your search rankings for the secondary keywords.
And that’s plenty enough to answer the original question – how to optimize blog posts for seo.
