I first started looking for ways to build an online business from home back in 2010.
Like many people I did a search one day on Google for “Make Money Online”
The first marketer I came across was an Australian guy called Brett McFall. I was intrigued by a book of his called “Make Money While You Sleep” – it sounded too good to be true.
I found the book on the local bookshop and devoured it on the train on the way to work. It lit a spark in my brain which still burns bright today.
Another book I found at the time was the legendary book by Tim Ferris – The 4 Hour Work Week. If
you haven’t read it, I recommend you do, or get the audio version to listen to in the car.
These two books inspired me like many others and put me on a road to escape the office cubicle and build an online business.
My Personal Online Journey
Since reading these two books I’ve studied and implemented many ways to build income online.
I built a site that sold muscle milk supplements to body builders. Another site that recommended and sold stretch mark creams, and yet another that sold Keurig coffee machines. I’ve never to this day even seen a Keurig coffee machine!
So for a while, each of these sites fulfilled my desire to build an online business, but there was a vital competent missing.
I had absolutely no interest in any of these products….
These days I have found my dream niche and my dream products.
I am passionate about the products I sell because I know I am helping people.
If you’re just starting out on the road to build an online business
In this blog post I thought I would show you the path I have trodden. All of the articles I write on this blog are for people wanting to either invest their time or their money into building a dream on line business.
But what if you want to make money online today?
Some of these are good if you need money right now, others if you are looking to build a huge online business in the next 6 to 12 months.
1. Sell your skills
Fiverr.com is great if you have a particular skill that people might want to buy. You might not even know it yet!
In old days you could only make $5 at a time buy selling what they call a gig (an item of work). Now most of the gigs on there often sell for at least $20.
Maybe you have an English accent. People will pay for the novelty of having you read out a birthday message to their friends.
I’ve seen one where the person writes a personalized message in the sand for 5 bucks.
If you have design skills like creating logos and infographics, there is a large demand for those skills.
Maybe you have experience in using WordPress. Lots of folks get confused with configuring plugins for example.
I’ve bought a lot of gigs from fiverr.com over the years. These were mostly quick graphics for my various blogs I mentioned. I’ve also bought article writing gigs, with little success, which I talk about next.
2. Freelance writing – try upwork.com
Can you write articles. There is a huge demand for writers, and also proof readers.
Most writers I have approached have been truly horrible. Appalling grammar and sentences that make no sense at all – just paragraphs copied from the internet and glued together.
So if you can write good English and charge reasonable prices, I promise you will stand out. I will even hire you 🙂
To be successful as a freelance writer, make sure you correspond to your potential customers with perfect English. I’ve been put off straight away by some folks before we’ve gone close to talking about the actual article I want by bad grammar.
3. Selling your stuff
EBay is something I tried back in the day
You can start by selling off things around your house. Old books and Cds to build up your trust factor.
When that’s done and you’re confident in the whole purchasing and shipping process, you can open your own eBay store. I looked at doing this, but decided it was not for me. I preferred the idea of selling digital
Here is my favorite! Blogging is the way to go if you want to build a large online asset. You’re looking at mine 😉
Whenever I’m trying to explain what a blog is. I give the analogy of it being like an online shop that is always open, welcoming new customers and selling solutions to their problems.
Whether your blog will be about French cooking, wedding cake design or hiking in Patagonia, it’s important to find your niche where you can sell something, and stick to it.
It’s also important not to try and compete head-on in the massive niches online. I’m talking health, wealth, self-improvement. These are far too big for the likes of you and me.
This blog is about serving folks who want to make money from home.
I serve these niches.
- Make Money Online
- Home business
- Multi-Level Marketing MLM
- Internet Marketing
- Affiliate Marketing
Which niches will you serve?
I hope this article has given you an idea of ways you can build an online business.
My recommendation is to go for the blogging option as you can make far more money in the long run. However it’s also the most time consuming.
If you need to make money right now then I would recommend you go with the Freelance writing option, and aim in the future for creating your own blog.
If you have a full-time income now and you want to escape a soul destroying job, then I recommend you start building your blog yesterday 😉
What is your experience of making money online? A grueling journey or has it been plain sailing?
